The Impact of Oil

A history of oil painting in the Low Countries and its consequences for the visual arts, 1350-1550.

Mark Clarke is an academic researcher on the Impact of Oil project, attached to the University of Amsterdam, working on artists' paint recipes, and maintaining a database of all research materials, resulting eventually in a monograph and on-line presentation. As part of this he is working on the "Montpellier Manuscript", a 14th century painter's manual.

The aim of the project (2007-2012) is to write an integrated history of the introduction, dissemination and development of the use of oil media in panel painting from 1350 to 1550. Even though the importance of the introduction of oil for the art of painting can hardly been overrated, such a history has never been the subject of a monograph.
